La Ex-Mordida: My favorite place/restaurant in Santiago

Anytime there is Mexican food around, you can bet I’ll be eating it- Eva Longoria

I have mentioned La Mordida before and don’t really know why I haven’t dedicated an entire post to it given that it is my favorite place in Santiago.  I found La Mordida walking since it is conveniently located in my street. It first caught my attention because it has a Mexican catrina in the sidewalk. As I said here I love Mexican food and Juan and I have probably eaten in La Mordida over 20 times since we found it last summer.  At first we tried different dishes but now even the waiter knows what we want.  We order 2 margaritas, half order of guacamole nachos and the tacos al pastor. We will continue to go back and here’s why:  Continue reading

A Saturday Trip to the Buin Zoo

This past Saturday we went to the Buin Zoo. I usually don’t like zoos because I always end up feeling bad about seeing animals in cages, out of their natural atmosphere, in small spaces and alone.

We went because we had a free guided tour and because I have wanted to go to Buin for a long time now.  Buin like Pirque is not a part of Santiago but it is still in the Metropolitan Region.  It is a commune of the Maipo Province. To get there you have to either drive, go by bus or by train.

On our way there we took a Bus which you have to take at Estación Central and on our way back we took the train which is just in front of the zoo.  I was excited to ride the train and then realized it was almost the same as riding the metro.  Continue reading

La Burguesía- Burgers done the right way

We usually go out to eat once or twice per week.  Lately we’ve been going to the same places time after time because we either don’t know where to go or have tried new places and don’t like them.

These past few weeks I have been reading a whole lot of Chilean Blogs and a few of them highly recommended La Burguesía.  The concept was American and Gourmet burgers made by Chileans.  I was immediately interested.  I love hamburgers, I mean who doesn’t  And we all know Americans know how to create, make and cook hamburgers the right way.  Continue reading

A couple things Santiaguinos should learn from New Yorkers

I believe people who live in large cities should live by some simple rules.  These rules are necessary for an amicable living experience.  I don’t come from a large city; I’m from San Juan; Puerto Rico’s largest city which has almost 390,000 inhabitants.  According to Wikipedia San Juan is the 46th largest city in the United States… who knows.  The point is that to me Santiago is a humongous city, everything is far away and going to places takes up a lot of time.

Living in Santiago has made me an angry person.  I realize that I feel mad at many times and this is not usual in me.  Back home in the Caribbean I’m a happy camper (most of the times). The main difference?  Here I walk, use public transportation and have four seasons.  Continue reading

twenty-eight and counting

A couple of days ago I had my birthday, my 28th birthday.  I was a little bit down because I’m approaching 30and that comes with a lot of baggage and expectations.  Nonetheless I managed to have an awesome day.  I had lunch with new friends, a Puerto Rican I had met online but never in person until last week and her Dutch friend.  We had a typical Chilean lunch at Restaurante Galindo in Bellavista. If you haven’t been there and you are craving authentic Chilean food this is the place to go.  You can try the classic pastel de choclo (a savory corn pie), porotos granados (beans confectioned with corn) or my favorite carne mechada with white rice.  Continue reading
